Not shabby

Though I really wouldn't classify this as ambience. I dunno why. Just doesn't seem mellow enough for the category. Nevertheless, enjoyable. Remember to review my work :P

HouseMasta responds:

thanks XBrav, i hope we do some collabs in the future

Finally...

Some beauty brought back into the portal. Ya know, this track is more than just a christmas tune, it's almost soundtrack level. If this was done live, it could be used in a motion picture. It brings out spirit.

For once, a song I can give a full review on.

The softness of the piece brings tranquility into the picture. There is no loud exploits of instruments, and in fact it does not really build to much. However, this is the heart of the piece. The piano is nicely glided inwards without a shocking pattern. It is essentially seamless.

Also I love the lack of percussion in this piece. The simple timpany to change over actually perfects this piece. If any more percussion were to be added, it would ruin the piece.

The strings are... well... perfect. They don't overpower the chorus while providing a secondary melody to accompany the bells.

I am just overwhelmed with the softness of this piece. It strikes my heart and brings back the heart of the season. It makes you want to forget all about gifts and running around. MilkMan-Dan, this piece is gorgeous. Kudos.

MilkMan-Dan responds:

A perfectly golden review to relieve the tension I've felt in submitting this.

The countless hours and days it took to perfect this were really worth it. I can't tell you how much Christmas means to me... I cannot even begin to elaborate.

My heart really belongs to this piece. I don't think I'll ever top the emotion I put into it.

I'm really glad you enjoyed it. And when the time does come. "Merry Christmas"

It's hard to rate....

It's ok... could be a lot better though.... the drums in there piss me off... and the basic settings for the slayer could've been modded. I like FL Keys because I just do. BTW you can't update songs on Newgrounds, just post new ones, so for your sanity and mine please don't post a new version unless it's completely different. Keep experimenting!

Shanetheguy responds:

lol thnx for the review. Yea i kno it sux. I was just givin everyone a preview. Ill work on it and it will be completely better when and if i re-submit it.

Nice...

Wow, it's really neat watching you progress through all the different techniques over time. Firsty, let me say that I like this piece. Just with the technical stuff I'll go through might make it sound as if I don't like it, which is ironic to the truth. Anyways, I can tell you wrote this one in FL, it sounds very much like those instruments. I like the ambience and mellowness of the song. Frankly, I never did like the actual melody of this song, so I won't go at that. However, the music itself is very much a trance piece. I love your synth instruments, I want to know which ones you use. Anyways, the drum beats are quite unique and the actual ambience overall is once again beautiful. *sigh* I wish I could still remix video game tunes, however, I've moved on into composition, which no one seems to really listen to on this site... Blah oh well good job again.

HouseMasta responds:

Thanks for youre review - i used the Wasps, eflute, tranceleads, and some other stuff i cant remember.

Thanks for the 9!

I must know...

Are you a Reason or a FL guy? It's gonna bug me b/c this is gorgeous. Just lemmi know in the response.

HouseMasta responds:

I am a proud representative of FL STUDIO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I never really learned Reason, and I'm used to FL, so i keep it

Thanks for the 10!

But...

Firstly, isn't this the swamp theme? lol I don't believe they reused the same song in the haunted forest as well. Btw, good composition of your own music, don't see much of that anymore.

MC-flashMasta responds:

In the Super NES Version, it was the swamp theme. But on GBC, it was the Haunted Forest theme.

It's very rare that I give a Perfect Ten

Wow... You have really improved since you first came onto newgrounds. (Lol I remember you reviewing some of my stuff). Truthfully, I think this song belongs on VGMix.com, it's diverse enough and fun enough to go on there. I'll gladly give you a good review there too. I love the instrument choices that you used here, to the point I want to know what samples or whatever you are using. Let's trade techniques sometime.

Not too shabby

I like your choices of instruments (is this perhaps EDIROL Orchestral?), but let me give you some advice (not bashing!):
1) The strings are a little too slow to come in, which makes them seem a little offset. Try increasing the attack time.
2) The horns are a little overpowering. Try reducing the volume a little.
3) Drums are good, but sound a little distant. Try using a different VSTi or soundfont.
4) The problem with using few instruments without tweaking them more is the fact that some parts are meant to have variable volumes, which don't become imported well in FL Studio. This involves more manual labor but is worth it.

Finally, I know this is stupid but it bugs me, this song is "Highwind Takes to the Skies". It is not the FFVII Overworld song. It is a variant of the overworld however.

Very good arrangement, I want to have a chat with you to discuss techniques. I'll add you to my MSN.

TenchuX responds:

Someone has good ears :o

OMFG

It sounds like a fat bastard is chasing you and everything's like warped colours (the out of tune sound). Lol it's actually making me sick to my stomach. One tip though: Never use a decent song to make it sound sick.

Dark-Jayson responds:

This will Probaly be the last practise mix I will post on newgrounds, thanks for all the help on making IMPROVEMENTS on my stuff. As for the rest thanks for you comments and keep watch for my new shit thats going up on vg mix. The smart ones can tell who I am on Vg mix anyways. Thanks for the support from most of you, see ya later ^_^

I like I like :P

It's pretty good, however, the vibrato in some of the tracks gets irritating after a bit. I like this version much better than the original though. The drum synth could be done a little better. What program are you using? I can give you some soundfonts or vstis for better drums. Overall pretty good.

Dark-Jayson responds:

I used those drum on purpose, they are 8 bit drums, but I could have went for better ones yes. I will keep it in mind.

Thank you all for your support. I'm still working avidly on music so stay tuned for further tracks!
